BASE DESIGN — BCN
This summer I really wanted to both travel and gain experience in graphic design, so I decided to kill two birds with one stone (so to speak) and look into internships abroad. In July I'll be going over to Barcelona for an internship I managed to arrange myself with Base Design. Base specialises in an array of areas within graphic design; from art direction, brand identity, editorial and exhibition, to signage, web design, packaging and film. Base has several studios: one in Barcelona, Madrid, Brussels, New York, Santiago and Chile, and they often communicate with each other via Skype which is really cool.
I'm pretty excited to get over there and I'm looking forward to seeing if Spanish design is any different to what I know here in the UK. I'll most likely be blogging throughout my 4 month stay, posting photos both in and out of the studio & what not, so stay tuned. Here is a selection of work from Base:

ROMAIN GAVRAS
Romain Gavras has to be one of my favourite directors. His music videos are almost like short documentaries with his work involving lengthy narratives and interesting characters that star in them. I've a strong admiration for him as a cinematographer because there's something very real and raw about his work - often depicting working or lower class people in broken down environments, both urban and rural. The close-up shots that establish the characters and their surroundings is something that I think differs Gavras from other directors today.

NOVEL — THE 2012 ISSUE
A while ago I posted an illustration of the earth but didn't really explain what it was for. This here is a page I was asked to design to implicate the theme of Novel magazine's next issue. The 2012 issue was meant to suggest the Olympics and the theories behind the end of the world. I'm mega chuffed with how it looks, as was the editor!

PENTAGRAM x D&AD
Managed to finally get round to taking some quality photos of the editorial posters I made for the D&AD Graphic Design brief. See more here, even though my website sucks right now.

MOOD Magazine — WBL 2012
Today I finalised my magazine design & am very pleased with the final result! I'm even more confident in pursuing a career in editorial design now. I enjoyed creating a magazine identity from scratch, and despite only coming up with the concept and a few pages this time round, I'd love to get another shot at an editorial brief but next time producing a whole publication. Now all I need to focus on is finishing up other pieces of work then that's me done as a first year!

MOODboard
Moodboard for the magazine I've chosen to design for my end of year project. The magazine I've given the name 'Mood', is a lifestyle magazine geared towards a male readership. The magazine's contents would revolve around menswear, trends, grooming, art and design, women, photography, & more. Mood's reader would be the type of man that has taste, and one that is interested in looking and feeling good. Despite only designing a few pages due to time, this moodboard implicates what the whole magazine would be about.

MOOD MAGAZINE
I decided to design a concept for a new magazine for my end of year brief. This here is potentially the final version of the cover. I've had about 10 different ideas since the opportunity to create our own brief's began and I've only just settled on this one a few days ago. Being indecisive will be the death of me. My plan now is to consider an editorial layout for the magazine content. With a fortnight left I only plan to design a few pages, which will ultimately implicate how the rest will look. So far I'm quite happy with the outcomes.

14 / 41
I recently purchased this nice little publication, 14 / 41 (14 years 41 logos) - a limited run publication by MashCreative founder Mark Bloom, a showcase of 41 of his favourite logos over his 14 year career. The book also includes 5 golden rules of logo design and an insight into how he approaches an identity brief. 14/41 is a lovely piece of design and is incredibly helpful, especially with all the identity brief’s I’ve been dealing with lately. 14/41 is available at a cleverly thought of cost at £14.41, and can be found here.

2012
A magazine brief I've agreed to do outside of the course is to create an illustration based on 2012, with references to the Olympics & the whole conspiracy behind the end of the world in December. The deadline is this coming Fri and with all the work I have going on I'd like this wrapped up asap. Unsure about which approach is strongest…

'EARTH'
I attempted a drawing of Earth, colour and all, and it sucked. Playing around with the colour I accidentally inverted it and realised it looked so much better. It doesn’t exactly look like planet Earth anymore, but it’s kinda cool. Ongoing project away from the course. More details when finished.
