01. Logos I began working on for the Medical Photography Department at Newcastle Hospital. I was trying to implicate the focus on photography through subtle and minimal imagery without trying to strongly suggest what it actually is. Following a crit and one-on-ones with lecturers I was told that my designs are too 'trendy' for something like this. I agreed. I was also advised to experiment with colour and to develop the iconography of the lens aperture into something more dynamic and maybe abstract. I thought I was on to a winner here and was close to having a final logo, so I'm glad this advice was been given as I knew it wasn't quite there yet. 02. After developing the aperture icon into something a little more abstract, adding colour and changing the typeface last minute, I ended up with this logo. The focus on camera parts was a popular choice in class so maybe the client will see a lot of similar submissions, but I'm happy with what I ended up with.

This is the final outcome of my work for the live brief Cupple. The icons I used as examples actually fit with the style of the ones Cupple used originally, just more improved and quirkier versions.

TIM BOELAARS

I've became quite a fan of Tim Boelaars, a designer and illustrator from Amsterdam. His work has recently inspired my briefing for the iPhone app, Cupple, in which the task is to design new iconography to be used as stickers. The clean and linear style he's known for is beautifully done, and the simplicity which he achieves in his illustrations and icons are great. I think this inspiration came at a good time as this style is definitely influencing my approach to this project.

BLACK SWAN x LITTLE WHITE LIES

Here is my entry for the D&AD illustration brief set by Little White Lies, which I submitted this afternoon. I chose to illustrate Black Swan as from what I'd seen, Drive (another I was considering) was a popular choice and I'd seen a lot of similar versions knocking about. Black Swan was also a popular choice however the original Black Swan issue cover for LWL (see here) is one of my favourites, so I wanted to use that inspiration and depict my own version. For anyone who hasn't seen the film, Black Swan is a psychological thriller about a prestigious New York ballet company starting production for Tchaikovsky's famous ballet Swan Lake, which requires a ballerina to play both the innocent white swan and the sensuous black swan. Nina (Natalie Portman) is perfect for the role of the White Swan, while Lily (Mila Kunis) has a personality that matches the Black Swan. When the two compete for the parts, Nina finds a dark and destructive side to herself. 

With this, I chose to involve both main characters in the illustration, by merging them both together to create the idea of an alter-ego which reflects the psychological aspect of the film. The illustration creates an unusual effect upon the eyes with the placement of both eyes on the characters placed closed to each other. The broken glass type treatment used for 'The Black Swan Issue' is meant to implicate Nina's shattered and fragmented personality. I think I did a good job, and think it fits with other existing covers.
