I saw this over a year ago but it's still just as awesome. The video documents the stages during production on the Black Swan Issue by Little White Lies, everything from illustrating the cover and the editorial layout and content down to the final stages of packing up the finished publication itself. Really nice insight into the world of magazine editorial design.

Little White Lies have teamed up with D&AD to set a brief which I am pretty excited to get involved in. Being one of my favorite current magazines with it's awesome artwork, unique editorial design and illustration being one of my areas of speciality, it’d be rude not to get amongst this! The brief is to illustrate a cover for one of five films; those being: Drive, Black Swan, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Super 8 and The Tree of Life. I’m actually spoilt for choice as 3 of them were my favourite films of 2011. I should really start brainstorming initial ideas and executing some pros & cons of each film as I can’t really decide which I want to do. The deadline is the 9th of March so I have a fortnight to come up with an illustration. This shouldn’t be a problem being a magazine I’m a regular reader of, therefore this should be a motivating and exciting couple of weeks…

Above I've included a handful of my personal favourite LWL covers, although there are tons more. I've gathered that many covers have been illustrated in more than one medium, including watercolour paint, charcoal, ink and others, therefore I should consider experimentation in my illustration as pencil is my comfort zone. I've already seen other students' versions of this brief and I think competition may be tight.

THE BISTRO

Never got round to blogging about the class brief for The Bistro and showing what I produced. Sadly my memory stick corrupted and I've lost a hell of a lot of work, including what I did for this. Sob. However the logo I made for the Bistro wasn't anything special so I've re-done it completely and I'm much happier with this. I originally went with the worn look for the first version so I've kept that in this design. There's quite a retro feel to this but I think that's cool, considering the building the 'bistro' is located in (located Rye Hill House, floor 2 at Newcastle College) is very modern- with it's glass / metallic interior and detailing.
